MURFREESBORO- The Hawks picked up their 14th win of the season over the Trojans of Virginia State tonight in court action. Chowan won with a final score of 92-74 and are averaging over 90 points an outing over their last four games. The Hawks got double-digit performances from four players, including Lando Morrison's third consecutive double-double night.
After a toughly fought first half that featured nine ties and four lead changes, the Hawks began to pull away late in the first half after Aaron Scott's three-pointer with 4:46 remaining in the half. Chowan led going into the half 47-36. In the second half, the Trojans cut the lead to six until Mark Brown nailed a three-pointer to put the Hawks ahead for good around the 10:00 mark. Most of the second half the Hawks were ahead by digits with their largest lead was 23 with 6:40 to go in the game.
Chowan finished the game shooting a scorching 52% from the field. The Hawks out hustled the Trojans in fast break and second chance points. Chowan scored a combined 26 points on fast break and second chance points whereas the Virginia State only scored 9 points. The Hawks forced 12 turnovers and scored 13 points off turnovers.
Four Hawks were in double-figures tonight led by Junior Forward Lando Morrison. Morrison scored 23 points on 11-12 shooting. In addition, Morrision grabbed 13 rebounds, 4 steals, and had 2 blocks. Morrison picked up his third straight double-double game.
Senior Guard Aaron Scott contributed with 19 points off the bench in only 17 minutes. Scott shot 50% from 3-point range (3-6). Junior Guard Jaleel Nelson added 14 points and shot 6-7 from the free-throw line. Senior Guard Chris Kenon scored 12 points off the bench and led the team in assists with six.
The Trojans put five players in double-figures led by J.C. Chaney with 21 points on a 9-10 shooting performance. Trey Mines added 14 points while Brandon Macklin, Chris Washington, and Jacobe Simpson all had 10 points in their 16th loss of the season.
With the win, the Hawks move to 14-9 on the season. Currently they are #1 in the NCCAA South Region and #7 in the nation. Chowan will play their final home game of the season against the Firebirds of the University of the District Columbia on February 21st at 2:00pm. Seniors Aaron Scott and Chris Kenon will play their final home game and will be recognized just prior to the tip.
The Trojans fall to 10-16 on the year. Virginia State will host Elizabeth City University on Saturday, February 14th at 7:30pm.
